Can FuguIta implements RAM-wipe?†

Hi FuguIta dev team,

I’d like to propose adding a “RAM-wipe” / memory sanitization implementation to the FuguIta project (in the spirit of Tails’ RAM wiping), as a security hardening measure against cold-boot/warm-boot attacks.

Requested behavior:

• Wipe/overwrite relevant RAM contents on shutdown/reboot or after USB removal, with an approach that prevents compiler optimizations from removing the wipe.
  
• Ensure secret material (keys, passphrases, session/caches holding sensitive data) is cleared at appropriate lifecycle points, not only “eventually”.
  
• Provide a clear threat-model-aware implementation note: what can realistically be wiped in a live system, what remains out of scope (e.g., hardware/VRAM/DMA limits), and how reliability is ensured.
  
  If you already have a similar mechanism in place, I’d appreciate pointers to the relevant code paths/design notes.
  
  Thanks for your work on #FuguIta — this would be a valuable defense-in-depth improvement.

  We understand the value of memory sanitization as a defense-in-depth measure against cold-boot and related attacks. However, implementing reliable RAM wiping is not something that can be achieved entirely at the #FuguIta layer. It would likely require modifications and support within the OpenBSD kernel itself, including shutdown and reboot handling.
  
  One of the core goals of FuguIta is to provide a Live environment that remains as faithful as possible to OpenBSD. For that reason, we generally avoid introducing features that require significant changes to the operating system itself. If such functionality were implemented and supported in OpenBSD, we would certainly consider incorporating it into FuguIta.
  
  There is also a practical consideration. Security-sensitive features such as RAM wiping require careful design, implementation, verification, and long-term maintenance. At present, the FuguIta project does not have sufficient development resources or expertise available to undertake such work independently.
  
  Therefore, we believe this type of feature would be more appropriately discussed and developed within the OpenBSD project itself.

But what would you think about creating a #FuguIta installation with Tor Browser, Tor, and i2p/i2pd pre‑installed for users who want an OpenBSD Tails‑like system for anonymous use? It would also be possible, for example, to restrict clearnet access with the firewall and allow only the three necessary users (_tor, _i2p/_i2pd, and a dedicated user who can run only Tor Browser). Of course there would still be limitations compared to Tails, but for users who prioritize security above all else, FuguIta would be the best existing option for an amnesic live system for anonymous browsing.   Regarding your proposal for an anonymity-focused system, I believe our recently released Desktop Environment Demo Version would serve as an excellent starting point for your ideas.
  Technically, all the requirements you mentioned can already be achieved using the existing features of FuguIta:
  
  • Install tor, tor-browser, i2p, and i2pd via pkg_add.
  • Create dedicated system users (_tor, _i2p, _i2pd, etc.) via adduser.
  • Restrict user environments by setting their login shell to a restricted shell, or configuring .xsession to launch only specific applications.
  • Configure pf.conf to strictly limit or block clearnet access.
  • Amnesic behavior: In the current Desktop Environment Demo, /etc/rc.shutdown is configured to automatically save the environment on shutdown. By reverting this to the default behavior (disabling the auto-save), you can achieve an "amnesic" live system where no session data persists.
• Since FuguIta provides the flexible live foundation, this entire setup is already fully implementable at this stage.
  As you mentioned having experience with anonymity-focused configurations on OpenBSD, I highly encourage you to give it a try and build this custom setup on top of FuguIta. If you encounter any FuguIta-specific questions or need technical advice along the way, we would be more than happy to guide and assist you.

日本語デスクトップ環境デモ版†

河豚板に日本語デスクトップ環境を入れたデモ版を作ってみました。 このデモ版は、河豚板が一般のライブシステムと同様、手軽に日本語デスクトップ環境が使えることを実演します。

【使い方】

ダウンロードミラーのdemoディレクトリからFuguIta-7.9_livedemo_ja-amd64-202606061.img.xzをダウンロードし、xzで解凍して16GB以上のサイズのUSBメモリに書き込んで下さい。

# pkg_add xz
# xz -dcv FuguIta-7.9_livedemo_ja-amd64-202606061.img.xz > /dev/rsdNc  (sdNは実際に書き込むデバイス名)

初回のみ起動途中でキーボードのタイプを訊かれますので、入力してください。 起動が完了すると、自動的に日本語デスクトップ環境が立ち上がります。

ネットワークは、有線LANの使用を推奨します。
WiFiを使った場合、初回の起動で接続できる可能性は低いです。起動後、WiFiを使用する設定を行いたい場合は河豚板ガイドの 複数のネットワーク設定を切り換えて使用する や ファームウェアのダウンロードが必要なWi-Fiデバイスを使う を参照して下さい。 IPアドレスは、IPv4はDHCP、IPv6はSLAACにより自動設定されます。

rootとdemoユーザにはパスワードは設定されていません。ログイン後、必要に応じて設定して下さい。

インターネットに接続できていれば、pkg_addコマンドでソフトの追加を行うことができます。また、dtjsetupコマンドによりデスクトップ環境の変更を行うことも可能です。

これはデモ版ですので不具合修正や改良は行いませんが、fiupdateによるOSのアップデートやpkg_add -uによるパッケージのアップデートは、このデモ版でも行えます。

なお、追加したパッケージ、各種設定、ユーザが作成したデータなどはシャットダウン時、自動的に保存され、次回起動時に復帰されます。
また、

doas usbfadm -r

と入力することで適時、保存を行うことができます。

システムをシャットダウンするには、PCの電源ボタンを長押しして下さい。または、

doas halt -p

を実行すると、システムの停止と電源断が行われます。

I made a demo version of FuguIta with a desktop environment. This demo version demonstrates that FuguIta can be used with a desktop environment as easily as a regular live system.

[How to use]

Download FuguIta-7.9_livedemo_en-amd64-202606061.img.xz from the demo directory of the download mirror, unzip it with xz, and write it to a USB flashdrive of 16GB or more.

# pkg_add xz
# xz -dcv FuguIta-7.9_livedemo_en-amd64-202606061.img.xz > /dev/rsdNc  (sdN is the actual device name to write to)

You will be asked for the keyboard type during the first boot only, so please enter it. Once startup is complete, the desktop environment will start up automatically.

We recommend using a wired LAN network.
If you use WiFi, it is unlikely that you will be able to connect on the first startup. If you would like to set up WiFi after startup, please refer to "Switch between multiple network settings" and "Use a Wi-Fi device that requires a firmware download" from FuguIta Guide. The IP address is automatically set by DHCP for IPv4 and SLAAC for IPv6.

No passwords are set for the root and demo users. After logging in, set them as necessary.

• Thank you for your question.
  The main reason is simply that #FuguIta is developed by a Japanese developer, and the available time and resources for maintaining documentation are limited.
  While automatic translation tools have become very good in recent years, creating and maintaining original English documentation still requires a significant amount of effort.
  I think many native English speakers tend to underestimate how high the language barrier can be for Japanese developers.
  Reading English and writing technical English documentation are very different tasks.
  FuguIta FAQ is not Japanese-only because of some technical requirement or because OpenBSD has been modified so heavily that it must be explained in Japanese.
  Rather, it is a practical decision based on the resources available to the project.

But when I downloaded this image file from jp1.dl.fuguita.org and jp2.dl.fuguita.org, the checksum was f643fdf2881ac5df3bfdea25d04e2bb791b1be58390410ec888b9d85f98336ff.

• Long answer: FuguIta is essentially a stock OpenBSD system.
  However, it includes tools that assist users in setting up a desktop environment. With these tools, you can easily install XFCE and use the latest Firefox packages available for OpenBSD.
  For system upgrades, FuguIta provides the fiupdate tool, while package upgrades can be performed using OpenBSD's standard pkg_add -u command. Please refer to the Getting Started and FuguIta Guide section for detailed instructions.

Power failure corruptions?†

I've been researching both FreeBSD and OpenBSD. I've read several articles/blogs/posts about people lamenting the sad state of the OpenBSD system after a power failure. Why do they say FreeBSD is better (filesystem) in this regard and can I expect a corrupt LiveUSB when using #FuguIta and the power gets cut? Or will I be able to resume usage without any problems? Thanks in advance.

• FreeBSD implements advanced file systems known as SoftUpdates+Journaling and ZFS. These can quickly resolve file system inconsistencies at restart, and ZFS in particular is designed from the ground up to minimize the occurrence of such inconsistencies in the first place.
  
  OpenBSD has neither of these (SoftUpdates was previously implemented but has since been removed). The traditional file system UFS (FFS) continues to be used. This stems from OpenBSD's philosophy of "avoiding added complexity and prioritizing verifiability."
  When recovering from a power outage or system crash, fsck is run — and this can take a considerable amount of time. Furthermore, as you pointed out, in rare cases, the restoration may not be complete.
  
  

  #FuguIta, on the other hand, is designed so that corruption of system files does not occur, allowing use to resume without most issues.
  
  The partition containing the OS itself is mounted read-only, so no writes occur there - See file system details: FuguItaGuide/3-Operation#x19e8b61
  User data resides in a memory-based file system, which means it will be lost in the event of a power outage or similar incident.
  User data can be written to a storage area on a USB flash drive using the usbfadm utility, and can be restored at the next boot: FuguItaGuide/2-Introduction#content_1_8, FuguItaGuide/2-Introduction#content_1_10
  
  It is strongly recommended to explicitly write to the storage area whenever important data is created or modified.
  Of course, there is always the possibility of a power outage occurring during a write to the storage area, so the risk is not zero. In such a case, fsck will need to be run manually on the storage area.

I am looking for the most secure OS, but need a comfortable Live Desktop experience. So I tried FuguIta... BUT following challenges or problems:
1. No live demo image for obsd 7.8
2. the live (non-demo) image 7.8, when installed on an USB stick to be run on EFI-systems does not boot
3. I would like to kindly request (if you have the time and will) that you offer also a FuguIta-like system based on HardenedBSD instead of obsd (I like all the compiler flags that they use). Best thing would be an obsd compiled with the flags, but I guess that is way too much work.
4. Coming from an Ubuntu- and Windows-like user experience I struggle with all the tids and bits that I need to resolve. For example it seems obsd has many troubles with my amdgpu and once I install a desktop it does not have hardware acceleration and therefore unusable / crashing. Not only gnome, but also xfce crashes. #FuguIta

  1. First, please note that the FuguIta live demo image is intended primarily as a demonstration of capabilities. FuguIta itself is not designed as a desktop-focused system; the demo simply illustrates that desktop usage is possible in addition to other use cases. For users planning network appliance–type deployments, for example, a full desktop environment may be unnecessary.
  Have you tried using a tool called dtjsetup?
  
  2. Regarding the EFI boot issue, I would be grateful if you could provide a detailed report of the situation. The reporting form is available here: FuguIta/Report Accurate reports are extremely helpful for improving the project.
  
  3. Supporting another base OS such as HardenedBSD is currently beyond the project's available resources. However, contributions are always welcome, and assistance from interested users makes a meaningful difference in expanding what the project can support.
  
  4. As for the AMD GPU behavior, since FuguIta is based on OpenBSD, hardware compatibility depends largely on OpenBSD itself. Reporting the issue to the OpenBSD project may help improve support at the base system level.

#FuguIta has been ported to Apple computers using PowerPC CPUs.
While there are still various limitations in operation, we are releasing it as a test version.

[About FuguIta-7.8-macppc]

FuguIta-7.8-macppc is an experimental implementation of the
OpenBSD-based Live System FuguIta, built on OpenBSD/macppc.

This PowerPC Mac version of FuguIta can be used in a manner similar to
versions for other architectures, but it has the following
limitations:

- Test Version --- This is not an official release. Errata and bug
  fixes applied to the i386, amd64, or arm64 versions are generally
  not applied here.

- Target Platform --- Development and testing have been performed on a
  PowerMac G4 (6,1) only. Other models have not been tested.

- Kernel Limitations --- A full-featured kernel (GENERIC) is currently
  not functional. Only device drivers required for the PowerMac G4 are
  enabled in the provided kernel.

- X Window Support --- The X server currently experiences segmentation
  faults, making X Window unusable at this time.

[Usage]

A. Booting from a LiveDVD

- Download FuguIta-7.8-macppc-YYMMDDN.iso.gz and decompress it.

- Burn the resulting ISO to a DVD-R or DVD-RW using growisofs from
  dvd+rw-tools or another suitable tool.

- Insert the DVD and power on the Mac while holding down the C key.

- Alternatively, hold down Option + Command + O + F during power-on to
  access OpenFirmware.
  At the OpenFirmware prompt (>), enter the following command:

      boot cd:,ofwboot /bsd-fi.mp

  After this, the system operates like a standard FuguIta LiveDVD.

B. Using a LiveUSB

Because USB booting on Macs of this era varies by model,
FuguIta-macppc does not support booting from a LiveUSB alone.

The recommended approach is to boot the kernel from a LiveDVD and
switch to the LiveUSB during startup. Follow these steps:

- Insert both the LiveDVD and the LiveUSB into the Mac.

- Boot the LiveDVD as described in the previous section "A. Booting
  from a LiveDVD."

- When prompted, select sd0a as the operating device:

      scanning partitions: cd0a sd0a sd0b sd0d
      FuguIta's operating device(s): cd0a sd0a
      Which is FuguIta's operating device? -> sd0a

- From this point, the system operates like a standard FuguIta
  LiveUSB.

Is the ARM 7.8 SD version ONLY bootable on RaspberryPi? #FuguIta I tried to boot on an Odroid M1 and it seems like it won't, but I suspect that I need to remove Petitboot, which I will do soon and try.

I realize that booting on M3 Mac's is painful, but wondering if there is any way to boot on an M3 Mac?

• Regarding the #FuguIta/arm64 version, I have a RasPi3 and a RasPi400, and I conduct development and operational testing on those devices.

Were I to use #FuguIta with a *very* old nvidia card, how would it work with default drivers vs. using the proprietary drivers which are old and in modern Linux are not supported so I have to use "nouveau" which sucks.

OpenBSD 7.8 was released recently, and we are now working on releasing #FuguIta 7.8 accordingly.
Test versions for the i386 and amd64 platforms have been built and are available under the test directory on our mirror servers. Please feel free to try them out.
Usage is the same as with version 7.7.

As for the arm64 version, it is currently under development toward a test release. Please give us a little more time.

Creating this would require almost as much work as making a separate distribution from scratch, and at the moment I’m fully occupied with the development and release of FuguIta itself. I’m sorry about that.
  However, FuguIta provides documentation such as Getting Started with FuguIta and the FuguIta Guide, which explain in detail how you can build the system you want yourself.
